The Ancient Quartzite Arch of Wisconsin

Rising above Devil's Lake, this natural rock arch is a geological survivor. While many landscapes crumble, this doorway of solid quartzite has resisted erosion for over a billion years.

This formation is composed of some of the oldest exposed rock on our entire planet. Formed during the Precambrian era, the quartz sand was compressed into rock and pushed upward long before dinosaurs existed. Glaciers later carved out the surrounding valley, leaving this stubborn arch standing alone. It remains a stunning reminder of the Earth's deep, violent history hidden in the Midwest.
