Dunes Are Actually Traveling Mountains

Dunes are not static piles of sand; they are constantly migrating landforms that move across the landscape. By shifting sand grains from one side to the other, dunes slowly crawl forward like living waves.

While they look like permanent mounds, dunes act like fluid structures that migrate whenever the wind blows. Sand is pushed up the gentle side and tumbles down the steep slip face, effectively rolling the dune forward over time. Large areas of these moving hills are known as sand seas or ergs. Some dunes can even collide and merge or grow into massive, wandering landscapes that reshape the desert floor.
