The Massive Mystery of Devils Tower

Devils Tower is not a mountain, but the exposed core of a giant volcano. This towering rock formation rises hundreds of feet straight out of the flat Wyoming landscape like a massive, petrified tree stump.

Geologists believe this structure formed when molten magma pushed upward but failed to break through the surface, slowly cooling into vertical columns over millions of years. As the softer outer rock eroded away, this hardened core was left standing in stark isolation.
