South Korea’s Mandatory Military Service

All physically capable South Korean men must serve in the military for roughly 18 to 21 months. While the mandate applies strictly to men, women can choose to enlist as professional soldiers.

This long-standing policy began in 1957 to maintain readiness against ongoing security threats. Most men are called up between the ages of 18 and 35, a process that becomes a major milestone in their early adulthood. Although the draft is mandatory for males, the military has seen a gradual increase in women joining voluntarily. This unique social structure continues to shape national culture and daily life across the country.
