In 1932, the Australian military launched a formal campaign using machine guns to cull a massive emu population. Despite their superior firepower, the soldiers were outmaneuvered by the agile birds and ultimately declared defeat.

Farmers in Western Australia were struggling as thousands of migrating emus devastated their wheat crops. The government dispatched soldiers armed with Lewis guns to control the population, but the emus proved remarkably resilient and difficult to hit. The birds scattered so effectively that the operation was eventually abandoned after barely making a dent in their numbers. This bizarre event remains one of the few instances in history where a military force was effectively defeated by wildlife.
