The Most Chaotic Marathon in History

The 1904 Olympic marathon was a bizarre spectacle involving rat poison, stray dogs, and a competitor who napped mid-race. It remains the strangest endurance event ever recorded.

Runners had to navigate dusty roads while dodging cars and kickback from race officials. One athlete finished first after hitching a ride in a car, while another was chased off course by aggressive wild dogs. To fight fatigue, the eventual winner consumed a mix of brandy and strychnine, which is actually a potent form of rat poison. It was such a disaster that organizers considered removing the marathon from future Olympic games entirely.
