The Lazarus Reflex in Brain Death

Patients diagnosed as brain dead can briefly raise their arms and cross them over their chests. This haunting reflex occurs without any conscious thought or activity from the brain.

This phenomenon is known as the Lazarus sign because it resembles a person rising from the dead. Although it looks incredibly lifelike, the movement is purely spinal and does not indicate any level of consciousness. It happens because nerve circuits in the spinal cord remain active even after the brain has permanently stopped functioning. Witnessing this reflex can be deeply distressing for families, but medical professionals recognize it as a purely biological reaction.
