Whales Have More Brain Cells Than Humans

Pilot whales possess more neocortical neurons than humans. While we often think of our own brain as the peak of biological complexity, these massive sea creatures actually outnumber our brain cells.

The neocortex is the part of the brain responsible for high-level functions like sensory perception and conscious thought. Research on long-finned pilot whales revealed they have a significantly higher count of these vital neurons than we do. This challenges the common assumption that human cognitive architecture is the most densely packed in nature.
