The Country That Does Not Exist

Nestled between Moldova and Ukraine is a breakaway state that functions as a fully independent nation despite being recognized by almost no one. It even maintains its own currency, military, and border controls.

Known as Transnistria, this narrow strip of land broke away from Moldova in the early 1990s following a brief war. While they have their own passports and parliament, the rest of the world considers them part of Moldova. It feels like a time capsule, with Soviet-style statues still standing in its capital. Visitors often find it surreal to cross an international border into a territory that officially appears on no global map.
