Hans Island is a barren rock that caused a decades-long border war between Canada and Denmark. Instead of fighting with weapons, the two countries competed by leaving bottles of liquor for each other to find.

For nearly fifty years, Canadian and Danish forces visited the island to claim it by leaving their national spirit and a flag. Canadians left Canadian whiskey, while the Danes replaced it with Danish schnapps and a note. This playful standoff finally ended in 2022 when both nations agreed to split the island. It is now one of the only places where Canada and Denmark share a direct land border.
