The Famous Night Watch Is Not Night

Despite its iconic title, Rembrandt’s masterpiece is not a nighttime scene at all. The dark, moody appearance is actually the result of decades of grime and aged varnish that obscured the original bright, daytime lighting.

Painted in 1642, this massive canvas originally depicted the civic militia under clear, golden daylight. Over the centuries, layers of dirt and darkened protective coatings led viewers to believe the soldiers were patrolling at night, eventually cementing the famous nickname. Experts have since restored the work to reveal the vibrant colors hidden for generations. It remains a fascinating example of how artistic interpretation can be shaped by mere age.
