Homes Designed to Defy Aging
Architect Shusaku Arakawa built experimental houses designed to prevent death. He believed that if a home forced your body to constantly adapt to uneven surfaces, you would never succumb to old age.
Arakawa and his partner Madeline Gins created spaces with bumpy floors and strangely angled walls to keep residents physically alert. They claimed that these disorienting environments stimulated the immune system and revitalized the brain. While most people find these buildings difficult to navigate, the creators insisted this intentional discomfort was a secret to longevity. Their most famous project, the Reversible Destiny Lofts, remains a bizarre landmark of architectural philosophy.
