The Dutch Sport of Canal Vaulting

In the Netherlands, athletes compete in a high-stakes pole vault over water known as Fierljeppen. Competitors sprint toward a long pole, leap into the air, and climb to the top to see how far they can land on the opposite bank.

This unique tradition originated as a practical way for farmers to cross the many canals that divide the Dutch landscape. Today, it has evolved into a high-intensity sport requiring immense strength, coordination, and technique. Instead of just jumping over an obstacle, the goal is to travel as far as possible before landing in a soft sand pit. Watching these athletes climb the pole mid-air feels like watching a real-life action movie stunt.
