Turning An Old Novel Into Art

Artist Tom Phillips spent decades transforming a forgotten Victorian novel into a masterpiece by painting over almost all the words. He used the remaining fragments to create an entirely new story hidden within the original text.

The project began when Phillips bought an obscure 1892 book for just a few pennies. He spent forty-six years meticulously highlighting specific words on each page to reveal a surreal narrative buried underneath. By blacking out the surrounding text, he turned a dense Victorian melodrama into a modern work of poetic art. It is a stunning example of how old objects can be reimagined into something completely new.
