The Marathon Runner Who Cheated By Car

In the 1904 Olympic marathon, Frederick Lorz was crowned the winner despite running only nine miles. He actually spent the majority of the race riding in a car before hopping out near the finish line.

Lorz suffered from severe cramps early in the race and hitched a ride in a spectator's car to reach the finish. He jogged the final few miles and was almost declared the Olympic champion before officials discovered his vehicular shortcut. Though he was briefly banned for this elaborate stunt, he later won the prestigious Boston Marathon legitimately. It remains one of the most brazen acts of cheating in sports history.
