Why You Think Others Are Persuaded
You likely believe media messages influence other people far more than they influence you. This psychological blind spot leads us to assume we are immune to advertising while others are easily swayed.
This phenomenon is known as the third-person effect, where we view ourselves as rational observers while seeing strangers as vulnerable targets. Because we cannot fully see our own subconscious biases, we overestimate our resilience to persuasive media. Curiously, this gap often drives people to support censorship, believing that while they are smart enough to handle content, the rest of society needs to be protected.
