A Shifting Sand Barrier Between Nations

This 61-mile thin strip of sand is actually a massive moving dune system that physically separates the Baltic Sea from a freshwater lagoon. It is constantly reshaped by wind and water, forming a fragile land bridge shared by two countries.

This extraordinary landform acts as a natural dam between the salty Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon. Because it is composed of loose sand, the spit is not a static landmark but a dynamic environment shaped by powerful coastal winds.
