The Microscopic Animals That Cheat Death

These tiny freshwater creatures have existed for 25 million years without ever mating. They can survive being completely dried out or frozen for millennia, only to wake up and start living again as if nothing happened.

Known as ancient asexuals, these rotifers have successfully evolved for millions of years without traditional genetic mixing. Their survival skills are legendary, including a 2021 case where they were revived after being frozen in Siberian permafrost for 24,000 years. By entering a dormant state called anhydrobiosis, they protect their bodies until conditions improve. They are effectively masters of hitting the pause button on life.
