The Shrimp With A Permanent Hunch

Many Hippolytidae shrimp are known as broken-back shrimp because of a distinct, sharp bend in their abdomen. This unique shape makes them appear as if their back is permanently fractured, though it is a natural anatomical feature.

This family of shrimp includes species that act as underwater janitors by cleaning parasites off larger fish. While many call them broken-back shrimp, they are also frequently called anemone shrimp for their habit of living alongside stinging sea anemones. They have evolved to tolerate the anemone's venom, using the tentacles as a protective fortress against predators.
