The Brain Disorder That Steals Memories
Known as wet brain syndrome, this condition creates a strange paradox where patients lose the ability to form new memories while simultaneously inventing elaborate, false ones to fill the gaps. It stems from a severe nutritional deficiency rather than a direct brain injury.
This syndrome occurs when a person lacks enough thiamine, typically due to long-term alcohol misuse or extreme malnutrition. The brain struggles to function without this essential vitamin, leading to both physical instability and severe cognitive decline. One of the most haunting symptoms is confabulation, where the brain creates fake stories to replace lost memories without the person even realizing they are lying. Early treatment with vitamin supplements can sometimes halt the damage, but long-term memory loss is often permanent.
