The Violent Reality of Ejection Seats

Ejection seats are not just simple spring-loaded chairs. They use explosive charges and powerful rockets to blast pilots out of disabled planes, subjecting the human body to massive G-forces in a fraction of a second.

To save a pilot during a mid-air emergency, the seat must instantly punch through the cockpit glass and propel the user far away from the fuselage. This process is so intense that pilots can temporarily lose several centimeters of height due to spinal compression. It is a calculated trade-off between the risk of impact and the certainty of a crash. Engineers design these systems to work in less than a heartbeat, making them one of the most extreme survival tools ever invented.
