The Year Without A Summer

In 1815, a massive Indonesian volcanic eruption triggered global climate chaos. The explosion was so powerful that it blocked enough sunlight to cause snow in July and mass famine across the Northern Hemisphere.

Mount Tambora ejected such an immense volume of ash and sulfur into the atmosphere that it lowered global temperatures significantly for an entire year. This anomaly led to the famous 1816 Year Without a Summer, causing widespread crop failures and food riots in Europe and North America. Interestingly, the gloom and constant rain during this period inspired Mary Shelley to write the classic novel Frankenstein while stuck indoors. It remains the most powerful volcanic event recorded in human history.
