An Underwater Scar Marking Ancient History

The Tehuantepec Ridge is not a typical mountain range but a massive fossilized scar on the ocean floor. It marks the boundary between two seafloor sections of vastly different ages that collided long ago.

This geological feature acts as a massive divider, separating older, deeper crust from newer, higher seafloor off the coast of Mexico. Rather than being formed by volcanic spreading, it is the remnant of an ancient fracture zone trapped within the Cocos plate. As the ocean floor moves, this ridge eventually dives into a deep trench near the Mexican coast.
