The Island That Never Existed

For over a century, a phantom island appeared on maps in the Coral Sea. It was not until a research ship sailed directly through the charted location in 2012 that humanity finally confirmed the island was entirely imaginary.

Cartographers had included Sandy Island on nautical charts since the late 1800s, leading people to believe it was a real landmass near New Caledonia. When an Australian research vessel arrived at the coordinates, they found only deep ocean water instead of land. This embarrassing error proved how easily misinformation can persist in geography for generations. Even digital giants like Google Maps had to scramble to delete the ghost island from their global databases.
