Your pet fish might be hiding a bacteria that causes skin infections in humans. Known as aquarium granuloma, this condition occurs when you touch water or fish contaminated by a specific germ called Mycobacterium marinum.

This bacterium is a close relative of the pathogen that causes tuberculosis, though it prefers cold-blooded hosts like fish. Most people accidentally contract it through tiny cuts or scrapes while cleaning their home tanks or handling fish. The infection typically results in stubborn, slow-healing bumps on the hands or arms. It is a rare but important reminder to wear gloves whenever you are maintaining your underwater displays.
