The Private Island That Declared Independence

In 1968, an Italian engineer built his own sovereign nation on a steel platform in the Adriatic Sea. He declared it an independent state, complete with its own official language and currency, until the Italian navy eventually destroyed it.

Giorgio Rosa constructed this unconventional structure just outside Italian territorial waters to escape national regulations. He named the platform the Republic of Rose Island, even going so far as to issue stamps and establish a local government. However, the Italian government viewed the project as a tax dodge and a threat to national sovereignty. Within months of its declaration, authorities intervened and used explosives to demolish the man-made territory.
