A Secret Garden Built From Trash

A government official secretly built this massive 40-acre sculpture park using only discarded industrial and household waste. He spent nearly two decades constructing the site in total isolation before it was finally discovered.

Nek Chand Saini began his illicit project in 1957, hiding his creation deep in the forest near Chandigarh. He meticulously gathered broken ceramics, bangles, electrical wires, and even rusted bicycle parts to form intricate human and animal figures. When authorities eventually stumbled upon the site, they were so astonished by its beauty that they chose to preserve it rather than destroy it. Today, it stands as a testament to the idea that one person’s trash is another’s masterpiece.
