The Red Sand Desert of Central Asia

The Red Sand Desert of Central Asia

Despite its name meaning Red Sand, the massive Kyzylkum Desert is a vast landscape of dunes and flat plains. It sits between two major rivers and spans across three different countries.

Stretching over 100,000 square miles, this desert is a critical feature of the historic Transoxania region. Its location between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers creates a unique geography in the heart of Central Asia. While the name suggests a crimson landscape, the terrain is actually a mix of shifting sands and rocky outcrops. It remains a fascinating remnant of an ancient world once connected by the Silk Road.
