In 1950, a young monk set fire to Kyoto's iconic Kinkaku-ji temple. Driven by his own obsession with the building's beauty, he sought to destroy the structure entirely to end his fixation.

Hayashi Shoken was a novice monk who became so disturbed by the perfection of the Zen temple that he decided it had to disappear. He succeeded in burning the historic building to the ground, taking the precious statue of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu with it. The tragedy sparked a national crisis in Japan, leading to the temple's complete reconstruction just five years later. It remains a sobering reminder of how extreme mental anguish can alter the course of history and iconic landmarks.
