Robert Catesby led this daring attempt to assassinate King James I after hopes for religious tolerance were dashed. They meticulously hid their massive stash of explosives in a cellar directly under the Parliament building. The conspiracy only unraveled when an anonymous letter tipped off authorities, leading to a late-night search that caught the conspirators red-handed. Today, Britain still marks the failure of this event every November 5th with fireworks and bonfires.
