The Deadly Hoard of Harlem

The Deadly Hoard of Harlem

Two brothers famously hoarded over 140 tons of junk in their New York home, creating an impenetrable fortress of trash. They even rigged their own hallways with lethal booby traps to keep intruders away.

Homer and Langley Collyer lived in total isolation for decades while gathering everything from piano parts to thousands of newspapers. Their obsession became so extreme that they blocked every exit and pathway with mountains of clutter. When police eventually entered the brownstone, they discovered that the brothers had accidentally triggered their own death traps. It took weeks for authorities to clear the massive pile of debris to finally locate the bodies.
