How Words Evolve Through Misunderstanding

Many common English words were created by accident when people misidentified a suffix and stripped it away. We often treat these invented roots as if they had existed all along.

Language can be surprisingly flexible, as seen when speakers mistake a noun for a verb. For example, people assumed the word peddler contained the suffix -er, leading them to invent the verb peddle. This linguistic process is known as back-formation. It shows how our brains constantly reshape language based on patterns we perceive, even when those patterns are entirely imaginary.
