Why Some Words Simply Do Not Exist

English allows for thousands of words that have never actually been invented. Even though they follow every rule of our language, these perfectly pronounceable terms remain empty holes in our dictionary.

Linguists call these missing terms accidental gaps. For example, you could easily say a word like blick or glape, and every English speaker would recognize them as valid sounds. Yet, these potential words hold no meaning and have never been added to our vocabulary. It is a strange reminder that our language is defined as much by the words we choose to use as by the ones we mysteriously ignore.
