The Architectural Deception of Parasite

The opulent mansion featured in the film Parasite was not a real house. It was a massive, custom-built set designed specifically to manipulate the viewer's perception of light and class division.

Director Bong Joon Ho needed total control over the film's perspective, so he had the entire home constructed from scratch on an outdoor lot. Every window and hallway was carefully placed to create natural lighting scenarios that would be impossible to capture in a traditional residence. This unique design allowed the camera to seamlessly highlight the massive gap between the basement and the main floor. By building the set, the creators effectively turned the house into a lead character that dictated the story's tense outcome.
