The Uncertain Origins of French Fries
Despite their global reputation, French fries likely did not originate in France. Both Belgium and France claim the invention, with historians pointing to early 1700s potato frying habits in the Meuse Valley as the true birthplace.
The term French fries remains a source of heated debate among food historians. Some suggest American soldiers in Belgium during World War I coined the name after enjoying the local dish. Because the official language of the Belgian army was French at the time, they mistakenly assumed the snack was French. Today, Belgians still view the fry as a national icon and a symbol of their culinary heritage.
