The Tree Climbing Caribbean Hermit Crab

Despite living on land, the Caribbean hermit crab is an expert climber that spends its life miles from the ocean. They are surprisingly social creatures that use loud chirping sounds to communicate with their neighbors.

Unlike their marine relatives, these crabs have adapted to live in forests throughout the Caribbean and Florida. They frequently climb trees in search of food and shelter, earning them the nickname tree crab. They rely on discarded snail shells to protect their soft bodies, often engaging in complex shell-swapping rituals to find the perfect fit.
