Phonk is a modern hip-hop subgenre that ironically owes its signature sound to 1990s Memphis rap. Its unique, distorted aesthetic is defined by chopped-up samples and slow, heavy beats that feel like a sonic time machine.

Emerging in the early 2010s, this genre was pioneered by producer SpaceGhostPurrp to channel the dark, raw energy of vintage underground hip-hop. It blends soulful jazz and funk elements with intentional production glitches to create a haunting atmosphere.
