Neptune’s Captured Outcast Moon

Neptune’s Captured Outcast Moon

Triton is the only large moon in our solar system that orbits its planet in the opposite direction of the planet's rotation. This strange behavior suggests it was once a wandering dwarf planet before being trapped by Neptune’s gravity.

Unlike other major moons that formed alongside their planets, Triton likely originated in the icy Kuiper belt far beyond Neptune. Its unique retrograde orbit acts as a cosmic fingerprint, signaling that it is a captured outsider. Because of this gravitational struggle, the moon is slowly spiraling inward and will eventually be torn apart to form a massive ring system. It remains a fascinating example of how the solar system is still reshuffling its members.
