The Ancient Land of Happy Arabia

The Ancient Land of Happy Arabia

Geographers once called Yemen Arabia Felix, which literally translates to Happy Arabia. Romans gave it this name because of its immense wealth from the spice trade.

During ancient times, the region was famous for producing highly valued frankincense and myrrh. These precious resins were so profitable that the area was perceived as an incredibly prosperous paradise by outsiders. It was distinct from the dry, barren landscapes of the rest of the peninsula. Today, we simply call this region Yemen, but its historical nickname reflects a time when it was the world’s luxury hub.
