The freckled duck is a master of deception. Because these rare birds gather in massive flocks during dry seasons, they appear common even though they are actually quite elusive and rare.

Native only to Australia, this bird earns its name from its unique mottled appearance. While you might spot hundreds of them huddled together in a single wetland, this behavior is a survival tactic during droughts rather than a sign of a healthy population. They are also known as monkey or oatmeal ducks, though nobody is quite sure why. These social shifts often trick observers into thinking the species is thriving when they are actually hiding their true scarcity.
