The Palace With No Foundation

Despite being five stories tall, the famous Hawa Mahal was built without a traditional foundation. It remains standing solely because of its unique, curved honeycomb design.

This architectural marvel in Jaipur was designed to resemble a crown and features 953 small windows called jharokhas. These openings allowed royal ladies to observe street life without being seen while facilitating a natural air conditioning effect. Because the building is remarkably thin and leans at an angle, it relies on this structural cleverness rather than deep footings. It stands as a testament to how creative engineering can overcome gravity.
