The White House Room That Sat Empty

For the first several decades of its existence, the White House’s largest room was essentially a hollow, unfinished storage area. Presidents even used this grand space to dry laundry because it lacked furniture and proper heating.

When the White House first opened, the East Room remained a cold, barren shell while other rooms were completed. It served as a multipurpose utility space where the family could hang their wet clothes near the heat. It was not until the mid-19th century that it was finally finished and furnished for formal state events. Today, it stands as the most prestigious venue for presidential press conferences and historic ceremonies.
