The California Road That Keeps Collapsing

Devil's Slide is a coastal cliff so unstable that it frequently crumbles into the ocean. Engineers spent decades losing the battle against nature before finally building a tunnel to bypass the shifting ground.

This treacherous stretch of California coastline was once part of Highway 1, but it was plagued by constant landslides and massive erosion. The ground would literally slide out from under the road during heavy rains, making travel incredibly dangerous. After years of costly repairs and frequent closures, officials decided to give up on the cliffside path entirely. Today, a massive tunnel carries traffic safely through the mountain, leaving the original crumbling road to slowly return to the sea.
