A Message for Humanity in 50,000 Years

A Message for Humanity in 50,000 Years

The KEO time capsule was designed to carry messages from today’s citizens to our descendants 50,000 years into the future. It was meant to contain unfiltered thoughts from every person on Earth, including children and the illiterate.

The project name was chosen because K, E, and O are the three most common sounds across all modern languages. Organizers planned to let the satellite orbit for millennia before it automatically returned to Earth. While geopolitical turmoil and funding issues ultimately forced the project to close in 2025, the ambition to create a universal archive for a future civilization remained unique. It serves as a fascinating look at how we attempt to define ourselves to a distant, unknown version of humanity.
