Measuring the Universe One Step Further
Astronomers cannot use a ruler to measure the stars, so they rely on a cosmic ladder. They calibrate distant measurements by linking them to closer objects, creating a chain of logic that spans the entire observable universe.
Since direct measurement only works for our closest stellar neighbors, scientists use standard candles to reach further. These are objects like specific pulsating stars whose brightness is predictable, allowing us to calculate distance based on how dim they appear. By overlapping these different methods, we build a reliable scale of the cosmos. It is a brilliant way to map the void when physical travel is impossible.
