The Surprising Origins of Horchata

Although many associate horchata with rice and cinnamon, the original Spanish drink contained no grain at all. It was actually crafted from tiny, wrinkled tubers known as tiger nuts.

Tiger nuts are not nuts at all, but small edible tubers that have been harvested since the time of ancient Egypt. When Spanish explorers brought this tradition to the Americas, they adapted the recipe using local ingredients like rice. This transformation created the sweet, milky cinnamon drink popular in Mexico today. It is fascinating how one name covers two entirely different botanical traditions.
