Ducks That Prefer The Trees

Unlike typical ducks that nest near water, this species prefers to roost and nest high up in tree cavities. Because of this unique behavior, they are often found perching in branches rather than swimming in a pond.

These birds belong to a distinct group known as whistling ducks, famous for their loud, flute-like calls. While they are now a common sight across the southern United States, they were historically much harder to find in North America. They have successfully expanded their range significantly over the last few decades. It is truly strange to see a duck perched high in a tree like a songbird instead of paddling on the surface of a lake.
