During the Victorian era, men were expected to wear elaborate tailcoats for dinner, which were incredibly restrictive and uncomfortable. The dinner jacket was introduced as a relaxed, informal option for lounging at home or in private clubs. It was famously dubbed a tuxedo after a fashionable club in New York adopted the style for its members. Even today, the outfit maintains its status as semi-formal attire rather than full formal dress.
