Why Your Mental Map Is Misleading

You often mistake your beliefs for reality. Because our brains rely on simplified models to interpret the world, we frequently confuse our internal map of the truth with the complex territory of real life.

We naturally form abstractions and definitions to make sense of our surroundings, but these are merely symbols, not the actual objects. Alfred Korzybski famously warned that the word is not the thing, meaning our language often traps us in limited perspectives. By failing to distinguish between our mental models and physical reality, we overlook nuance and perpetuate misunderstandings. Recognizing this gap is the first step toward seeing the world with greater clarity.
