The Toy That Originally Used Real Potatoes

Before the iconic plastic version arrived, children used actual potatoes to build their Mr. Potato Head toys. The original 1952 kit only provided the facial features and accessories, leaving parents to supply the vegetable base.

Since parents were often frustrated by rotting vegetables left under couches, Hasbro introduced the familiar plastic potato body in 1964. This change made the toy much more durable and allowed for a wider variety of facial parts to be added. Interestingly, the original kit did not include a potato at all because of post-war food rationing concerns. It remains a classic example of how a simple shift in materials can turn a messy craft project into a timeless household staple.
